Our Vinyl Weighs a Tonne: This is Stones Throw Records – Documentary Review

A few days ago, I finished watching this documentary about the independent record label Stones Throw Records, who have been a record label since the 80s and are still going strong. The movie chronicles the life of the label through the owner “Peanut Butter Wolf” and multiple guest stars including Common and Kanye West. The story tells the life of “Peanut Butter Wolf”, from his start as one part of a rap duo. When his rap partner dies “Peanut Butter Wolf” tries to send the pre-recorded music to multiple record labels with no response. Consequently, he sets up his own label to release the music. Then after a few years gains more popularity and more artists to the label. Soon the label gains lots of popularity and multiple artists, making them a very well independent label for all kinds of music. However, having a major focus in rap and RnB.

This movie was very well chronicled, directed, and edited. I really enjoyed learning about this record label from their starting years to their present. I really found “Peanut Butter Wolf” a very admiring and clever man. Overall I would give this movie an 8 out of 10.
